Automate Desktop Tasks by Demonstrating Them Once with Codex Record & Replay
Turn manual clicks into automated repeatable skills using Codex Record & Replay.
Use the Record & Replay feature in the Codex macOS app to capture a manual GUI workflow and convert it into an automated skill that Codex can run on your behalf.
The Scenario
You have a repetitive weekly task, like pulling specific data from a CRM and formatting it in a spreadsheet, that is hard to explain but easy to show. You want to automate this so Codex can perform the clicks for you.
Before & after
Usually, you would write a lengthy SOP document or record a video tutorial that others have to watch and replicate manually, taking 30–60 minutes per person.
With Record & Replay, you demonstrate the task once while Codex records the clicks and logic. This turns the process into a repeatable skill that takes 1–2 minutes to execute in the future.
The Prompt
Record a new skill titled [WORKFLOW_NAME]. I will now demonstrate how to [DESCRIBE_TASK, e.g., generate a monthly report from Salesforce and upload it to the shared Drive]. Once recorded, please save this as a reusable skill for my workspace.
This feature is part of the Codex app for macOS and requires 'Computer Use' to be enabled. It is ideal for bridging the gap between showing someone a task and actually automating the execution of that task.
